Outdoor Adventures: WhiteSpider’s Wellbeing Weekends
Hollie Taylor
When was the last time you truly escaped the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immersed yourself in the beauty of the UK countryside?
At WhiteSpider, we are big believers in that being outdoors is a great way to nurture mental health and recharge after a work week. That’s why, alongside our founders' mountaineering background and passion for the outdoors, we started our company initiative WhiteSpider's Wellbeing Weekends all with the view of promoting positive wellbeing and mental health through treks across the UK countryside.
These weekend adventures have helped to further foster a culture of wellness and camaraderie, with our team embarking on regular countryside hikes at least once a month. The meetups have consisted of walks in the majestic Lake District to the rugged Peak District and the awe-inspiring Snowdonia, we've explored some of the UK's most breathtaking landscapes. One weekend the team engaged in the thrill (they may have other words to describe it) of abseiling. That experience taught them firsthand why they say, "don't look down"! With Ben Nevis on our bucket list, our weekend adventures continue to expand.
After our adventures, we often relax in a cozy pub, pint and grub in hand, where conversations range from the legendary ‘Seathwaite Steve Irwin’ (our local dog warden) to an attendee’s quirky craving for a ‘Mountain Daddy’ (IYKYK). It’s all about togetherness and fun, without a single mention of box breathing or relaxation techniques.
Aside from the team building and fun aspects of these weekend meetups, there are proven benefits to spending time outside and the positive impact nature has on our mental health.
Why the Outdoors is Good for Your Mind
- Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Studies have shown that spending time in nature can significantly reduce stress hormones like cortisol; as being out in nature has been linked to helping mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.
- Enhanced Creativity: The beauty and calmness of nature can stimulate creativity and problem-solving skills.
- Improved Mood: Exposure to natural environments has been linked to increased feelings of happiness and well-being. With one study showing that 70% of UK adults agreed that being close to nature improves their mood and reduces stress.
- Boosted Immune System: Spending time outdoors can strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of illness.
WhiteSpider's Wellbeing Weekends are more than just a way to explore the stunning UK countryside— they provide a much-needed opportunity to recharge after a busy work week while promoting mental health, teamwork, and creativity amongst the team. From incredible views to adrenaline-pumping activities like abseiling, our team has discovered the benefits of immersing themselves in the great outdoors.
So, the next time you're feeling overwhelmed, consider lacing up your hiking boots and embracing the soothing power of nature.
